Jammu
and Kashmir, 1859, thirteen years after the British sold
the state to Maharajah Gulab Singh, a Dogra chieftain, for
Rupees 7,500,000 and "one horse, six pairs of shawl
goats and three pairs of Kashmir shawls." The Dogras
ruled Kashmir till 1948, when Maharaja Hari Singh, a Hindu,
signed away Muslim-majority Kashmir to India and so much
agony has followed the exercise of that one and only vote.
