Hazratbal, perhaps the site most sacred to Kashmiris, because it contains a single hair of the Prophet Muhammad’s beard (brought to the Vale in the 17th century) has witnessed some charged historical moments, most dramatically in 1963, when the hair was stolen and the people erupted in rage.
